Interior tour with an architectural historian in the building of the German Embassy.
The appearance of the building of the German Embassy became the subject of heated discussions both in a narrow professional environment and in society. Moreover, this building by Peter Behrens became a kind of sign of the brewing world conflict.
It seems symbolic that before the beginning of the First World War, the building was perceived as alien to the spirit of St. Petersburg, and after the destruction of the German Embassy, in particular, the destruction of a group of sculptures above the building, contemporaries spoke of the "first victory over Wilhelm".
Gradually, the attitude towards the masterpiece of the German architect changed. You can trace the influence of Behrens' interpretation of classical forms of architecture in individual buildings of the 1930s, which were created by Leningrad architects.
We will hear the history of the creation of the German Embassy and talk about the current development of the site. We will also examine the main interiors of the building: the Prussian and Throne halls, the Vestibule, the Great Dining Room - they are made in the style of modernized classics. We will be told about the fate of the sculptural group "Dioscuri", lost during the war.
